Harness The Power
Of The Internet To
Reach Out And Touch Millions

You're on the internet right now. You've sensed the awesome opportunity, the pure power, that's at your fingertips. Deep down, you know you could do good things, wonderful things . . . If only you could grab hold of the power of the web and put it to work for you!

Why not? Other people have done it. Let me repeat that. Other people have done it. That means it CAN be done. That means YOU can probably do it, too.

Since you're using the web right now, I probably don't need to convince you of its value. But just for fun, I thought I'd dig up some statistics about the power - and reach - of the World Wide Web.

As of December 2007, the Earth's population was about 6.6 billion people. Researchers quesstimate that approximately 1.3 billion use the web. That's roughly 20% of all the people on the planet!

In the United States, which has a population of about 301 million, 215 million people use the net. Roughly 71%.

The internet was opened to the general public in 1992. So public internet usage has zoomed to 1.3 billion users in just sixteen years. That's an incredible growth rate!

How many websites online? Apparently, nobody really knows. There's no central agency controlling the net (a good thing!). So there's no single group that can compile all the statistics.

One survey done by Netcraft in January 2008 received replies from more than 155 million websites.

How many individual web pages on the internet? I didn't find any consistent numbers. Google and Yahoo! have been "arguing" about who has the largest index of pages. But they've apparently stopped publishing those statistics. What's more, the numbers change daily.

(From what I've read, the Yahoo! search engine accesses more total web pages. But Google apparently has a better search strategy for bringing back useful results.)

A search for the letter "a" on Yahoo! brings back a search results count of about 32 billion pages. Start with 32 billion. Then add all the pages that aren't indexed by Yahoo!. Then add the number of foreign language pages that don't use the English letter "a." Yikes.

Then add this tidbit: According to John Battelle's Searchblog,"blogs alone are adding millions of pages every week."

Hey David! Enough with the numbers!

The real question is, how do you start making money on the internet?

If you're at all like me, you want the answer NOW, today! If a search engine can bring back 32 billion pages of results in less than a second, why can't I get an answer today?

Okay, here's the answer in a nutshell. Mind you, this is bare bones:

Produce web content that meets the needs of enough people online.

If presented in the right way, good content will bring traffic.

Presell that traffic by means of your presentation.

Then monetize that traffic in any number of ways.

Personally, I think that description sounds a bit cold and materialistic. But boiling it all down, that's how most people make money online. That's the essence of internet marketing.

The trick is to match that bare bones strategy up with YOUR particular interests and abilities. Then put flesh on those bones, one step at a time.
